Real time monitoring of water contaminants

To provide clean and safe drinking water is a growing challenge, particularly in third world countries. Most cities and states have strict guidelines or monitoring and treating water allowing us freedom from concerns about water safety. Yet, even in developed countries, people are still in danger of becoming ill in restaurants, cruise ships, lakes and swimming pools from chemicals, pharmaceutical waste products or certain types of bacteria, such as E. coli and Legionella, that may contaminate water. Standard water disinfection methods such as sedimentation, filtration, and chemical or biological degradation are not always fully capable of destroying emerging contaminants. For these reasons, efficient, quick and preferably in-field means to regularly determine water quality are always desired.
