Abstract:

Physiologically, mucosal systems occur in three different states – as membrane-tethered surface layers, solutions, and hydrogels. In this thesis, models for these mucosal systems were generated from purified mucin glycoproteins, the functional key component of mucus. With these model systems, a structure-function analysis was performed to identify the structural motifs and mechanistic principles, which govern the diverse functionalities mucins fulfill in the human body.
