New qCell T Application Note

Quantifying the Etch Rate of Borosilicate Glass Exposed to Dishwasher Detergents Using QCM-D
QCM-D with 3T analytik

This Application Note investigates the chemical etching and degradation of borosilicate glass in alkaline dishwasher detergents. Using QCM-D, the etching process can be monitored in real time, providing insights into detergent adsorption, glass dissolution, and changes in the surface during exposure. Layer thickness changes and etch rates can be quantified under controlled temperature and flow conditions, enabling rapid comparison of detergent formulations and assessment of glass durability.

The qCell T system enables this in-situ characterization using borosilicate-coated quartz sensors operated via qGraph software. By monitoring frequency and dissipation changes throughout detergent exposure, the system captures the transition from initial detergent adsorption to glass etching and reveals changes associated with surface roughening and smoothing. The resulting data allow quantitative determination of layer thickness changes and temperature-dependent etch rates within a single experiment. For increased throughput, the qCell T can also be combined with the LiquiBox autosampler for automated testing.
